About Green Theatre

A thoughtful approach
to sustainable
healthcare.

Green Theatre brings clinical care, environmental responsibility and healthcare policy into the same conversation.

Our perspective / 01

Why Green Theatre

Healthcare is built around caring for people. Green Theatre starts from the belief that thoughtful use of resources and attention to the environment are part of that responsibility.

Our interest is in the way care happens: the choices made, the materials used, the routines followed and the systems that support them. We want sustainability to feel connected to the realities of healthcare rather than separate from them.

Our purpose

Connecting care
and responsibility.

To encourage environmentally responsible healthcare through research, education, policy and advocacy, beginning with anaesthesia and operating theatre practice.

Our purpose includes making the environmental aspects of care understandable and examining how they relate to institutional priorities, professional guidance and wider health-system decisions. The clinical encounter and the arrangements around it both deserve attention.

Our vision

Healthcare in which environmental responsibility is a natural part of good practice, considered alongside safety, quality and the needs of patients.

What guides our approach

Patient care.
Evidence. Context.

01

Patient care comes first. Sustainability should support appropriate care rather than become a reason to withhold something a patient needs.

02

Evidence matters. We value a clear explanation of why an approach may be useful, what is known about it and where uncertainty remains.

03

Context matters too. A useful idea needs to make sense for the people, equipment and working conditions involved. We do not assume that every setting needs the same answer.

Our perspective / 01

Starting in the operating theatre

Anaesthesia and operating theatre practice give Green Theatre a clear clinical focus. They provide a way to examine the relationship between the care a patient receives and the resources needed to deliver it.

This is a starting point, not a boundary. Our wider interest is in how clinical knowledge, environmental understanding and policy thinking can inform one another, while keeping healthcare dependable, appropriate and centred on people.

Public education in practice

Our public-facing work includes LowFlow, an educational initiative by Green Theatre. It makes one aspect of anaesthetic sustainability easier to explore, alongside our broader interests in research, professional learning, policy and advocacy.
